360’s HD-DVD price drops… slightly

July 27th, 2007 |

Microsoft has lowered the MRSP for the HD-DVD add-on to the Xbox 360 from $200 U.S. to $180. This, of course, comes shortly after Sony lowers the price of the PS3 down to $500.

If you feel like doing the math, a $500 PlayStation 3 can get you Blu-ray and next-gen (can we call this current-gen yet?) gaming. Meanwhile, $400 gets you an Xbox 360 and an extra $180 will add on HD-DVD, brining us to $580. For those of you who are lazy, or stupid, that’s $80 more than the PS3 — which still gets criticized for being so pricey. Analysts are predicting a price drop for the 360 to arrive any day now — probably by $50.

But, will $20 really make a difference? I recently purchased an HDTV myself, along with high-definition digital cable, new wires and all that. I’ve got to wonder… after spending $1000+ on a decent set, upgraded your TV service and shed a tear over $80-150 in HDMI cables, is $20 going to change your mind? Somehow, it doesn’t seem like a big deal to me.
