Call of Duty 3: Problems for Xbox Live

November 25th, 2006 |

Call of Duty 3 on the Xbox 360 is currently having connection problems. The same thing happened with Call of Duty 2. You’ll know this if you’re having a huge problem connecting to online games, or finding people to play with online in both player and ranked matches. You’re most likely to run into this problem if you have a router in your home network.

So here’s how to fix it. First, run a network connection test on your Xbox 360. Chances are, if you’re having this problem, the NAT value at the end of the test comes up as “Strict”.

To fix that, you need to first check the IP address of your Xbox 360. This can be done in the network settings area of the Xbox 360 menu. If possible, set it up so that your Xbox 360 has a static (unchanging) IP address.

Then, enter the configuration area of your router. If you’re unsure of how to do this, portforward.com has full instructions on how to do this for a wide range of routers.

Basically, what you need to do is configure your router to redirect TCP on port 3074 and UDP on port 88 to the IP address of your Xbox 360 console.

Once you’ve done this, you should be able to get into games online. I still find it takes a while to get into a ranked game, but I’m able to. To verify, run another network test on your Xbox 360. If everything went smoothly, the NAT value should now be “Open”.
Supposedly the game’s developers are working on fixing the problem for everyone without these steps, but if you’re having trouble that fixes it most of the time. Good luck!

It seems to just take a while to get a good game together. They say it’s cause of demand…

What they should have done is set it up in a way similar to Battlefield 2, in which you can join a current game in a Ranked match. (They do this for Player matches but not Ranked).

This problem seems to be fixed for most people. I would contact Activision support to see if there are other options for you.
