Xbox Not-Live Arcade
June 21st, 2006 |Xbox Live Arcade is a hit. Such a big hit that Xbox chief Peter Moore wants to take the games offline — available in retail stores to hit those players who haven’t subscribed to Xbox Live.
I’m unsure about this. The concept is to (a) sell the games to those who don’t participate in online distribution, and (b) to make the Xbox 360 more attractive to the “light” gamer with card and puzzle games.
It’s a nice idea, but how different is this from seeing the $5 bin of PC games that nobody cares about? And why is a classic game going to make me more interested in buying a next-gen console when I can get those same games, usually for free, on my PC?
It’s like taking Xbox Live Arcade, and removing the part that made it successful — the distribution model.
